Lesson 23: Having Godly Sorrow
Hi AY Family,
Before we even start talking about flirting, we have to know what it means first.
According to research, flirting means to behave as though attracted to or trying to attract someone, but for amusement rather than with serious intentions.
Flirting does not only happen between an adult and a minor or between adults, but also between minors.
People ask the question, "Can Christians flirt?", and my answer to that question is "No".
Christians do not think that flirting is a problem but even the Bible talks about lust and why we should avoid doing it.
Matthew 5:27-28 says: “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
1 John 2:16 says: “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
If you are touching someone in a way that makes them uncomfortable, even if it’s just their hair for example and you are just playing around, if the other person tells you to stop and you are still doing it, then that is a problem.
I was told that touching others without their consent in general is not okay.
I ask myself, “How can people see flirting as something normal? Am I the only one who sees the issue with flirting?”
Normalizing flirting is not the only issue I have with flirting, but also the fact that there are no consequences for flirting with someone else.
When you flirt with someone else, you do not see them as a person, but instead, you see them as an object.
Flirting is very unbiblical.
It’s one thing when you are flirting with someone else verbally, which is already a red flag, because it is much easier for people to know that you are flirting with someone else.
It’s another thing when you are flirting with someone else nonverbally, which is also a red flag, because it is much harder for people to know that you are flirting with someone else.
God wants us to guard our hearts from lust.
Proverbs 4:23 says: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Sincerely,
Samuel Reid
